What is a DNS leak?
A DNS leak happens when your device keeps asking your ISP's DNS servers to resolve domain names even though your traffic goes through a VPN. Your ISP can then still see every site you visit.
How does this test detect a leak?
We compare the network that owns your public IP address with the network that owns the DNS resolver answering for you. If both belong to your ISP while a VPN is active, DNS is leaking.
How do I fix a DNS leak?
Enable your VPN's built-in DNS leak protection and kill switch, disable IPv6 if the VPN does not tunnel it, and set a private resolver such as 1.1.1.1 or 9.9.9.9 manually.
Is a leak dangerous without a VPN?
No. Without a VPN it is normal and expected for your ISP to resolve your DNS queries. It only becomes a privacy problem when you believe your traffic is private.
