How the speed test works

SpeedExact follows the same four-stage method used by open measurement projects such as LibreSpeed. Knowing what happens in each stage makes the numbers far easier to trust.

    We find the nearest test endpoint

    Your browser opens connections to a global measurement network and picks the route with the lowest round-trip time, so the result reflects your line rather than the distance to a server.

  2. 02

    Latency is sampled first

    A burst of tiny requests measures round-trip time repeatedly. The median becomes your ping and the variation between samples becomes your jitter.

  3. 03

    Download runs on parallel streams

    A single connection rarely fills a modern fibre line. Several streams run at once and ramp up until throughput plateaus, which is how your true download capacity appears.

  4. 04

    Upload is measured the same way

    Random data is posted back on multiple streams. Upload matters more than most people expect for video calls, cloud backup and game streaming.

Providers advertise a maximum, not a guarantee. Regular tests at different times show whether your line delivers close to that number or quietly falls short every evening.

A single result proves little. A logged pattern of slow evenings is exactly what an ISP needs before it will investigate your connection properly.

Understanding your results

Download speed

How fast data reaches you, in megabits per second. It governs page loads, video quality and how quickly large files arrive. 25 Mbps handles 4K on one screen; a busy household is comfortable from about 100 Mbps.

Upload speed

How fast you can send data out. Video calls, cloud sync, live streaming and large email attachments all depend on it. Cable and DSL are heavily asymmetric here; fibre usually is not.

Ping (latency)

The round trip time for a single packet, in milliseconds. It decides how responsive a connection feels — in games, calls and remote desktops, low ping beats raw bandwidth.

Jitter

How much your latency varies between samples. Steady 40 ms is far better than 20 ms swinging to 200 ms, because voice and video need packets arriving at a predictable rhythm.

Tips to improve your speed

  • Test on Ethernet once to establish a baseline, then compare Wi-Fi against it — the gap is your wireless problem, not your provider's.
  • Move the router into the open, upright, at waist height or above, away from metal, mirrors, TVs and microwaves.
  • Put phones and laptops on the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band and leave 2.4 GHz for smart plugs and distant sensors.
  • Pause cloud backups, game updates and other devices' downloads before testing; anything else running steals the same bandwidth.
  • Restart the router if speeds decayed gradually over weeks — long uptime with a full connection table is a classic cause.
  • Retest at 8pm as well as midday. Evening congestion is the single most common reason a fast plan feels slow.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is an online speed test?

A browser test measures what your device actually achieved during the test window. On a wired connection with nothing else running it usually lands within a few percent of your line rate. Over Wi-Fi the wireless link, not your broadband, is often the limiting factor.

Why is my speed lower than the plan I pay for?

Advertised speeds are the maximum at the router, before Wi-Fi losses, protocol overhead and network congestion. A result of 80 to 90 percent of your plan on Ethernet is healthy; consistently under half is worth reporting to your provider.

What is a good ping?

Under 20 ms is excellent, 20 to 50 ms is good for almost everything including gaming, 50 to 100 ms is fine for browsing and video calls, and above 150 ms starts to feel sluggish in interactive use.

Does the test use my data allowance?

Yes. Saturating your line is the only way to measure it, so a full test typically transfers a few hundred megabytes on a fast connection. On a metered mobile plan, run it sparingly.

Do you store my results?

Your history is saved only in your own browser so the Results page can show a trend. It is never uploaded to us, and clearing it on that page removes it permanently.
